Shugi is a Hydro Nation Scholar and a PhD candidate working with research groups in epidemiology, water research and risk assessment registered at the University of Aberdeen, working with the James Hutton Institute and Health Protection Scotland. She is investigating the number of human cases of gastrointestinal disease due to private water supplies in Scotland using epidemiological data. This project involves determining associations between indicator organisms found in private water supplies and cases of human disease. The transmission of pathogens from various sources, to the contamination of private water supplies and to human disease will be described using risk assessment models.

Prior to commencing her PhD, Shugi graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Science (Statistics & Mathematics) and with Honours in Population Health at the National Centre for Epidemiology & Population Health. Here she researched the interference patterns between influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), through the use of mathematical models. These models analysed the seasonal magnitude and timings of both diseases for various durations of cross-protection.
